Veteran/military education benefits and FAFSA, 1008

You are encouraged to complete the electronic Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Be sure to check with your campus for specific financial aid forms that must be completed as part of your packet. Veterans and active duty military personnel are considered automatically "independent" for federal need analysis purposes. For the definition of active duty for financial aid purposes go to Veterans status for student aid purposes to learn more about your situation.

If you meet eligibility requirements you may concurrently receive federal financial aid and military education benefits. You are encouraged to complete the FAFSA application even if you are already receiving military education benefits.

In certain circumstances your federal Veterans education benefits are excluded from your estimated financial assistance calculation. Department of Defense education benefits may not be excluded. For further information on exclusion of Veterans education benefits visit the Federal Student Aid website.

If you were on active duty last year and had a higher income than this year when you will be in school it is important to talk to a financial aid counselor in your campus student financial aid center. Explain your situation and request to complete a "Budget Adjustment" and/or "Special Circumstances/Professional Judgment" form.

Financial aid discusses student aid programs for Veterans and their dependents such as Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA) and federal benefits for Veterans and dependents.

Note: Federal Tuition Assistance (FTA) IS calculated into the estimated financial assistance.
