Career planning for military spouses and families

Frequent permanent changes of station (PCS) moves associated with the military lifestyle create challenges for spouses and family members, including maintaining stable careers, building job tenure, and obtaining training and education.

Military Spouses at CareerOneStop is an electronic gateway to education, employment, training and other community resources available to military spouses. It is critical to provide military spouses and family members with the best available tools to aid them in their search for employment. One-Stop Career Centers are prepared to offer services and special programs targeted to meet the unique employment needs of military family members.

Online Career Counseling Resource:

At MyMilitaryEducation.org a success coach and/or career counselor is available to work with you in exploring career and educational options, administrating and interpreting career assessments and providing career counseling services to Veterans, military spouses and family members free of charge. Career assessments available include the Strong Interest Inventory (interests), Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (personality) and the World of Work Inventory (skills). All career assessments and counseling services are provided via online/phone. Online Career and Educational Planning Workshops and Resources:

There are numerous resources available to assist individuals in career decision-making. Minnesota State offers a MyMilitary Online Career Workshop, facilitated by a distance credentialed career counselor who provides feedback and assists participants throughout the workshop.

Community Resources:

Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) CareerForce helps job seekers find employment, help businesses find workers, and help anyone at any stage explore and plan careers.

Campus Resources:

If you already know which college campus you will be attending it is often a good idea to visit the campus Career Center or make an appointment with a Career Counselor who can help through the career-decision making process and assist you with career assessments, informational interviews, resume writing and more.
