Individualized degrees require a student to have a plan that is guided by a faculty member or advisor. They can be organized in different ways according to the Chancellor's procedure 3.36.1. They may:
- Follow a unique theme (such as food safety using perspectives from sociology, economics and health);
- Be interdisciplinary (coursework is in two disciplines, such as gerontology and exercise science); or
- Have a disciplinary focus (which means that all work is in the same discipline but the work is uniquely chosen to fit student needs).
Individualized programs are generally more flexible than traditional programs. Courses in individualized degree programs and other programs may be offered on an accelerated or more condensed schedule, and some may be available online also. However, students in individualized programs do not necessarily finish more quickly.
