Planning to Transfer

If I am unsure of my major or transfer school, what should I do to keep the most credits possible?

Your best bet for transfer in Minnesota is to complete the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC), a specific set of courses encompassing 10 goal areas. Once you have completed the entire MnTC, you will have satisfied the general education component of many degree programs at four-year Minnesota State Colleges & Universities and the University of Minnesota.

You may also wish to explore with your two-year college transfer advisor the pluses or minuses of completing a full two-year Associate in Arts degree, which is usually 60 semester credits in length, and requires completion of 20 credits beyond the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum.

If you don't think you'll transfer to a public college or university in Minnesota, your two-year college transfer advisor can guide you in selecting basic general education courses that are generally accepted in transfer. After your first semester or two, you increase your chances of taking courses that won't meet requirements at your transfer school if you are undecided about your transfer institution and/or major. However, if you know your major, you are advised to complete standard courses for that major during your freshman and sophomore year along with some other general education courses.

The transfer advisor at your college or university or at the school where you plan to transfer can assist you in choosing appropriate courses. You can also use Transferology for plans at participating colleges and universities.
